Class Ideas
The following are ideas for classes that I'd like to offer in late summer and fall. Once I have a few people's confirmed interest in any specific class, the time frame for each will be determined (i.e, first enrollments have the option of choosing their preferred timing for a class). My preferred class length (from past experience) is a duration of 2.5 hours, meeting for at least 4 and no more than 6 weeks. Weekend classes are also a possibility. All classes take place in my private studio, located at 221 SE 11th (in the Troy Studios Bldg), and are limited to 6 students.
Painting on Glass or Plexi
Weekday Evening Class (dates to be determined by interested students), 6:00-8:30 pm or 6:30-9 pm
I have personally been painting on glass or plexiglass for almost 20 years, and have developed my own means of creating a three-dimensional space using primarily oils on plexiglass. For this class, I will show you some techniques that I use to paint on the glass, and we'll also explore some experimental methods involving the use of acrylics, collage, image transfers, and stencils. You'll have the choice of working on a single layer of glass in the traditional reverse-painting method, or of stacking 2-4 layers within a shadow-box frame. The combination of solid and transparent areas in a glass painting creates a sense of depth of real space. You'll be encouraged to find your own style and thematic development through this unusual mixed media exploration.

Botanical Themes in Mixed Media
Weekday Evening Class (dates to be determined by interested students), 6:00-8:30 pm
Botanicals are a wonderful subject to explore with mixed media techniques. The combination of textured surfaces with images of plants or flowers allows you to move beyond the traditional "still life" genre into something contemporary and unique.
Students will study actual samples of blossoms or leaves, in combination with photographic imagery. We will create painted papers which will be collaged to either a panel or canvas surface. Additional surface texture can be created through the use of acrylic gels and pastes (modeling paste or its substitute, joint compound). The botanical studies will be applied over this textural surface through drawing, painting, and/or image transfer techniques. Other possibilities for surface manipulation include the use of stencils and metallic leaf.

Intuitive Painting and Collage
Part 1: Fresh Starts
Weekday Evening Class (dates to be determined by interested students), 6:00-8:30 pm or 6:30-9 pm
The focus of this class is to learn how to create in a series by exploring surface, experimental painting approaches, and collage. Students will be encouraged to explore images and techniques that free the imagination. Application of water-based paint (acrylic, watercolor or gouache) will be explored in combination with image transfer techniques and collage. We'll start off by creating a variety of backgrounds for our painted and/or collage experiments. Emphasis is on bringing together inspiration from several sources. Materials can include: paint, drawing media, photographic imagery, digital imagery, found objects, organic material, cloth and three-dimensional objects.

Intuitive Painting and Collage
Part 2: Layering Surface and Meaning
Weekday Evening Class (dates to be determined by interested students), 6:00-8:30 pm or 6:30-9 pm
This class is a 2nd part to "Fresh Starts". Though one is not required to take the first class, one should ideally come with some unfinished paintings, collages, or background surfaces. The emphasis of this class shifts to layering, adding personal content and creating compositions that work. Options for further imagery and embellishment include acrylic image transfers, stencils, stamping, and metallic leaf application. Use of various acrylic mediums will be further explored and demonstrated.
